Baby Z - A Birth Story

Baby Z was born November 30 at 3:30 in the afternoon, he weighed 8lbs 2oz. This is the story of how he entered the world:

So I went in for my regular doctors appointment monday morning. Everything was normal baby was fine, my blood pressure was a little (tiny) bit high for the second week in a row. I went for blood work last week and everything think came back fine (not great but fine) My doc looked at me and said "well your only 10 days away, there is no point in waiting for this to get worse, I am going to send you to be induced". So off to the hospital I go!

I went home and grabed my hospital bag just in case, but didn't think I would be needing it. My husband took the day off work to come with me for the induction prosses. Boy am I glad he came.

When I got there the plan was to induce me using cirvixall? a gell / tampon thing? so they inserted in and I had to do two hours of monerting and if all was well could go home and wait for real labour to kick in. So after having this thing in for maybe 20 min alarms and stuff start going off and nurses and doctors come rushing in. My baby's heart rate had dropped really low and they were all trying to get it to go back up again. I was on oxygen and they were having me turn and move all over the place until the heart rate came back up. After that they decided to just keep trying this induction because it seemed like a fluke that the heart rate droped. So another 5 min pass and the same thing happens again. So that was the end of that induction and they had a doctor come in and tell me that I was most likely going to have a c-section. (this was not part of my plan but I had the next 12 hours to get used to the idea)

They left me on this really uncomfertable bed and monitered me for several more hours. Then a doctor came in and said she wanted to try and induce me again using oxitocine? (this will make me have contractions and then hopfully I will dialate) So I got hooked up to an IV and they started this treatment. After 10 min Alarms were going off this time his heart rate stayed down for just over 2 min. I was imediatly taken off the IV. Several more hours of monitering, Another doctor came by and said I would deffinatly be haveing a c-section now. (all fine by me at this point I just wanted my baby to be okay) Then Cazyness happened

Another doc comes in and says (without talking to me or DH at all) She is going to break my water and give me oxytocin again (even though last time my baby almost died) apparently everything else was fine. She then came over and broke my water (it hurt so bad it was like I wasn't even a person to her, she didn't even acknoladge me or DH. She just riped my legs apart and started doing her thing. DH was beside himslef at how I was being treated) All the nurses were so confused by this new move and asked her several times if she had seen the results of the last time we used Oxytocin, she said she had.

So they shipped me off to labour and delivery, where they informed me that I would have to lie on my back strapped to monitors the whole time I was in labour so they could make sure nothing went worng with the baby (so there goes all of my planned pain relif ideas) Just laying there made the pain unbarable, I never wanted and epi and had told DH that I didn't want one however now that it was the only pain option I had (the gas did nothing and if I wanted a pain killer shot they had to check me everytime and I didn't want the crazy doctor near me ever again so I was left with and epi)

The epi worked great, however when you have an epi you have to get a cathader (this is where the fun starts) they put in my cathader, its really painful. I wait for the epi to take away said pain..... it doesn't. I tell the nurse she puts in a new one .... pain is worse ..... I tell the nurse she says some woman can feel the pressure of it and thats normal .... I try and breath through the pain that will not go away..... I tell the nurse that there is no way that this is normal .... she puts in a new one.... and looks at me like I am being the biggest baby ever! The pain is so bad I can't talk and I am gasping for air I am almost crying, DH has no idea what to do. A different nurse comes in and talks to the other nurse... they ask me how I am doing .... I can't really respond but they get the idea that I am in pain. New nurse asks are you sensitive to latex? I almost scream back "YES!" My nurse says she forgot to ask me that (she was a student) Then I get my 4th cathader an latex free one and I finally am starting to get some relif. (altrhough my bladder is so irratated by this point that it is still pretty unplesent)

After 16 hours of labour and contractions I hadn't dialated hardly at all, 1cm. Then I randomly got a fever. So i was off to have the c-section that they promised me 28 hours ago. Baby Z was born a 3:30 in the afternoon. He spent 2 nights in the NICU becasue they couldn't get a vain for his IV so they had to put it through his umbilcal cord (IV for the fever that I had) He then developed Jaundice on the 3rd day and would refuse to brest feed so we had to use a bottle and formula. (when I first went to the NICU to see him I bled all over the palce and I had to be taken away by a nurse) So I didn't really get to see my baby until 1 in the afternoon the next day.

Away we were in the hospital for a week, but we are home now. Brestfeeding has been a chalange but he is now been on the brest for a week (we have to use a nipple sheild, because of the bottle feeding we did, he got lazy) So that is that we are just happy that he is healthy and home now!
